Career Supports

Students at the College Internship Program have the opportunity to enhance their career skills through career skills training and internship placement. The career curriculum through our in-house classes and our individual sessions at CIP provides instruction in the following: self presentation, communication skills, defining student interests, value clarification questionnaires, skill assessments, individual career counseling sessions, and career exploration. We practice the interview process, videotape mock employment interviews and provide feedback. Job coaching is also available.

Internship placement is an important part of the experience at the College Internship Program. Staff provide guidance and support in matching interests with abilities and in finding appropriate internship sites. Students whose focus is college academics participate in an internship that entails a few hours per week. Those whose primary focus will place them on a career track will be involved in a more extensive internship first, with possible paid positions thereafter.

Students with internships will also profit from meeting with other students for discussion and skill development as an internship support group. This group will discuss various topics including sharing their experiences, performance, advocacy, areas for improvement and what they have learned about themselves during the internship process.

Community service at the College Internship Program offers the opportunity to see oneself as a citizen of the world. By contributing to the community students promote personal growth by giving of themselves to others. Helping others can also help students find what direction they want to pursue in their own career path. There are a variety of community service sites to choose from and students are required to participate in some form of community service.

Career Skills Training and Employment Program – C-STEP

Students at the College Internship Program can attend a local college or select CIP’s career skills training and employment program. This program offers students who prefer not to matriculate at local colleges an opportunity to participate in on-site classes at CIP that are challenging, informative, and focused on personal and professional success.

Students receive the support services and skills instruction they need to become self-motivated, self-sufficient young professionals that can forge ahead and succeed in developing a clear objective for their career paths and be successful negotiators in the world of work.

The goal of the program is to enable our students to develop self advocacy and motivation so that they may take their places in the adult workforce, contributing to society and fulfilling their own potential.
