Berkshire Alumni Offers Fitness Program

Sam Smith is a CIP alumni and currently is not only running his own personal training program, but works at the Library of Congress as an Administrative Clerk and is being trained for the Operations Technician position at Life Time Athletics.

His personal training program is geared towards individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome, Autism, and Nonverbal Learning Disabilities.

In Sam’s own words: “I ‘ve been diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome myself, and I believe I can motivate people with similar diagnosis to stay in shape, build confidence and stay healthy as they grow as individuals.”

Paul Morris, Norman Rockwell Museum Researcher

I started working at Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA on 6/4/08 researching colleges that have art history programs in the USA. Here are the top ten colleges that I recommend on the list; Gettysburg College, University of Pennsylvania, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, University of Texas at Austin, Clark University, The Catholic University of America, Colby College, University of Richmond, State University of New York at Albany, and Lafayette College. Tom Daily my supervisor thinks researching colleges is lots of good work. I will continue to do the rest after the first ten colleges are complete.

Paul Morris, President of the Recreational Committee

When I started the recreational committee with the founder Doug Gould, I always went to every meeting on Monday nights for 3 years. I won two recreational awards at the spring convocation as a freshman and a sophomore. I am a junior right now, who continues to assist Doug with popular weekend activity suggestions such as Union College Men’s Hockey, Crossgates Mall, & Movies at Riverdale. I always got more experience from Lonnie Wexler who was my general manager during my freshman year & Matt Curtis who will continue to become my general manager this year during my junior year after he started last year during my sophomore year. Professor Eric Gibbons and I teach weekend activities Friday nights and Saturdays with students and we also teach about finances. For example, “How much will a Union College Men’s Hockey game ticket cost?” and the answer was $8.00 but it was very cheap compared to a $15.00 Springfield Falcons Hockey game ticket so far. Doug makes decisions for tickets that are pre-paid by the center such as going to do something very expensive such as Proctor’s Theatre & NYC. I am looking forward to seeing the fireworks on July 4th in Albany, NY. This is the best recreational program that we have ever had.

Academic Excellence Award

Chris Kennedy, a second-year student at CIP Brevard, received his Associate in Arts Degree from Brevard Community College in May. Chris had struggled academically before coming to CIP but maintained a 4.0 grade point average at BCC and was accepted into the college’s Honors Program. In August, he will attend the University of Central Florida to continue to work on his B.A.

Chris, 24 years old with a Non-Verbal Learning Difference, has served as Student Senate President for the past two years and earned the respect of both students and staff. His generosity to others, patience, sense of humor, and commitment to personal growth make him an excellent role-model for his peers.

Congratulations, Chris.
